1 Book signing at Lorelei Books: Mississippi, by Ben Wynne. Beginning with the state’s earliest settlers—the Native Americans, Southern historian and Mississippi native Ben Wynne explores the many paradoxes that comprise Mississippi—like its rich soil and namesake river and its vulnerability to natural disasters like Hurricanes Camille and Katrina. The birthplace of the blues and the childhood home of such American icons as Elvis Presley, William Faulkner, Oprah Winfrey, and B.B. King, it boasts a rich cultural heritage, but is also stained by the legacy of slavery, and remains one of the nation’s poorest states. In Mississippi, Wynne sketches the state's development from wilderness and primarily native settlements to industry-driven cities; examines the importance of slavery and agriculture and the devastation that followed the Civil War; follows the slow transition from segregation to equal rights marked by the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, and ends in the present with the focus on post-Katrina Mississippi. Born and bred in Mississippi, Wynne earned his doctorate in history at the University of Mississippi and is the author of numerous works on his home state and the South. 2 p.m. at Lorelei Books, near the corner of Washington and China Streets in Downtown Vicksburg!
